LEX: It’s such an exciting time for you! A lot of things happening and I see you in quite a few different places and projects too. Since then I have done quite a few music videos and completed two films. I also performed as ‘Subbeni Kaki’ in the play ‘Hariyo Dhunga’. I attended an acting workshop in GYA theatre run by Sunil Pokharel sir.
KUSUM: Before I came to Nepal, I had already made up my mind that I would initially join a theatre school. I know it has been a number of years since you moved to Nepal to pursue arts and entertainment, how has it been so far? I managed to have a few minutes for a quick chat with possibly the next star of the Nepali silver screen. With Meri Mamu’srecent release, Kusum is currently busy on the promotional trail. After completing the 10th grade at the British Gurkha Academy in Kathmandu, Kusum moved to the UK with her family in 2010 where completing her education became her priority.
The bug to perform and be creative was planted. In 2004, Kusum participated in Kid Queen Kathmandu, a contest for young girls where she has crowned Kid Queen 1st Runner-up. For Gurung, who made her debut in Nepali cinema alongside SarukTamrakar in MERI MAMU, she always knew that this was where she wanted to be. For Kusum Gurung it actually took a switch from the UK to Nepal after completing her undergraduate degree to finally be able to pursue a career in arts and entertainment. Whether you take matters into your own hands and create short films for millions to see on YouTube or share glossy photos of your life on Instagram, it’s a time where everyone has the ability to make something out of themselves. With more newcomers making their debut in Nepali cinema than we can remember, 2018 is definitely a boom time to be in the creative industry.
